Chaplaincy
Morden College has an on-site chapel and Chaplain. Regular services of Christian worship take place every week at both sites in Blackheath and at Beckenham.
The Chaplain
Our Chaplain is responsible for the spiritual care of the community and is a full-time member of staff.
The Chapel
The chapel, which is accessed from the Quadrangle, was built by Sir John Morden. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Rochester in 1701. Like many churches constructed in the reign of William and Mary, it is quite plain; the original windows would not have contained stained glass and the reredos (the large decorative altarpiece) is of richly carved oak. On the central panel are inscribed the words of the Ten Commandments while the two side panels display the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed.
Services
Sung Eucharist takes place every Sunday in the College chapel at 10.00am followed by a Eucharist in Cullum Welch Court at 11.20am. Evensong is held on the first Sunday of the month at 4.00pm.
Weekday services include Morning Prayer every Tuesday to Saturday at 9.00am, Eucharist at 9.30am on Wednesday and Friday and a Eucharist at Ralph Perring Court on Wednesday at 6.30pm.
A Part of College Life
The chaplaincy plays an essential role in the daily life of the College. The Chaplain is available to offer pastoral care and takes a full part in the daily life of the community. Visits to Cathedrals and pilgrimages to holy sites are arranged on a regular basis while choristers and other church musicians, linked to us through the Dame Susan Morden Charity, come to sing and play in the College from time to time.
